UTDRO Welcomes Faculty Development and Continuous Education and Professional Development Co-Directors

By

Dr. Rebecca Wong, Vice-Chair, Education, UTDRO

In anticipation of the tremendous changes motivated by education framework that is “competency based”, UTDRO has been in search of a Faculty Development and Continuous Education and Professional Development Director.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Co-Directors: Dr. Barbara Ann Millar, and Dr. Ewa Szumacher to this role effective December 1, 2016. Their individual passion complimented each other perfectly, while their vision aligns and synergizes.

Dr. Barbara-Ann Millar has extensive experience in education having just completed a nine year term as our residency program director. She has recently took on the role of Chair –Elect in Radiation Oncology Specialty Training at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Her vision and knowledge of the new model of specialist training “competency by design” make her the perfect leader to design faculty development initiatives that would allow us to lead in this area. Dr. Millar is also the associate director for the Education Scholars Program, actively involved in various educational flagship initiatives such as the CFD New and Emerging Academic Leaders Program, and the national course for “Canadian Leaders in Medical Education” supported by the Canadian Association of Medical Education.

Dr. Ewa Szumacher is equally passionate and dedicated to education, completing her Masters in Medical Education with Sub-specialization in health professional education at OISE before launching her career with a focus in medical education. She is heavily engaged in educational scholarship and innovation including leading the IPE rounds at Odette cancer Center, attracted education grants to examine novel ways of delivering professional as well patient education, and serve on the editorial board of a number of educational journals including Journal of Cancer Education. She has successfully led the planning of a number of CME events including serving as co-chair to UTDRO’s Target Insight. She also serves on the Executive council of the American Association of Cancer Education.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Szumacher and Dr. Millar to their new role.
